Girls Aloud: Then and Now
It’s been three long years since Girls Aloud performed together and they’ve had some dramatic ups and downs since then. Between them they’ve endured a messy divorce, a life-threatening illness, a stint in rehab, rumoured fall-outs, financial woes and career disappointment!
Luckily, they’ve also had solo albums, movie roles, and a successful makeup line. But despite their individual successes, they’ve obviously missed each other because Sarah Harding recently dished that they’re itching to reunite. “When I watched the Spice Girls on stage at the Olympic closing ceremony I did think, ‘I want that to be us’. We needed a break, time to do our own things, but now we’re starting to feel really nostalgic about the 10 years we’ve been a band and really want to mark it with something special,” she said. Sounds good to us! And the girls always hinted that they would reform in 2012, as it marks 10 years since they were brought together on talent show Popstars: The Rivals on 30 November 2002. It’s so emotional!
They’re staying tight-lipped about the details at the moment, so while we wait to hear if we can expect a reunion tour or just one crazy concert, let’s get up to speed on what’s been going on with our favourite girls, Cheryl, Sarah, Nadine, Nicola and Kimberley…
Without a doubt the best-known member of the band, thanks to her big-bucks role on X Factor.
Career moves: Chezza’s a successful solo artist and just released her third album. But she’s had her lows. She was fired after three weeks as a judge on X Factor US and feared she might never work again after that incident with the toilet attendant.
Body talk: She dropped to a size 6 after she contracted malaria in 2010, and admitted that she then “ate everything” in a bid to get well. After she was criticised for gaining 7lb, she recruited Hollywood trainer Tracy Anderson.
Love life: In 2010 she divorced her footballer husband Ashley Cole after he cheated. Since then she’s been linked to Derek Hough, and now backing dancer Tre Holloway.
Last we heard… Cheryl and her manager Will.i.am were involved in a minor car crash after a late night in the studio, but she was back at work the following day with her arm in a sling. Phew!
Since taking a break from Girls Aloud, Sarah has been best known for her party girl antics. But after a spell in rehab last year, she’s now feeling better than ever!
Career moves: She had the most success as a model and actress, signing a Dhs580,000 deal with Ultimo and appearing in the TV drama Freefall and flick St Trinian’s 2.
Body talk: She’s recently been snapped looking slimmer than ever, and Sarah says she’s in great shape because she replaced her addictions with Bikram yoga. But she admits that it was “silly” to have filler put in her lips.
Love life: Sarah checked into rehab in October 2011 after her split from fiancé, DJ Tom Crane. She then had a brief romance with controversial rehab buddy Theo De Vries, who was accused of assaulting her. She’s now with DJ Mark One.
Last we heard… Sarah’s planning to release her long-awaited solo album in 2013 and her debut single is due in January. Well done, Miss H!
She’s been living in LA since Girls Aloud took a break, and was rumoured to have drifted apart from the rest of the band and fallen out with Cheryl. But the girls made up this summer, so it’s all systems go for the big reunion. Yay!
Career moves: Despite big plans for a solo album, Nadine couldn’t land a record deal. So in 2010 she released her album, Insatiable, through supermarket chain Tesco’s record label. She also owns a theme bar in California called Irish Mist.
Body talk: According to reports, Nadine shocked diners at The Ivy when she produced a scale to weigh out a portion of plain fish with no vegetables, then sent half the dish back to the kitchen unfinished.
Love life: In May 2011, Nadine split from American football player Jason Bell, after dating for three years. She’s now dating model Waz Ashayer.
Last we heard… She’s currently working on her second solo album, which is due for release in January 2013.
Although Kim has yet to release a solo album, she’s done lots of acting and TV presenting and has appeared in her own documentary, Kimberley Walsh: Blue Jean Girl.
Career moves: After doing Les Miserables, Kim made her West End theatre debut in 2011, playing Princess Fiona in Shrek the Musical. She also won a role in Horrid Henry: The Movie and co-hosts the weekly TV music chat show, Suck My Pop.
Body talk: Kim’s not a fan of fad diets and says that she’s learned to love her curves. She told The Sun, “I find it hard to keep the weight off. I’m quite normal really… it’s mostly my bum that annoys me.”
Love life: Kim’s only had two boyfriends that we know of, and has been dating Justin Scott, who was a member of boy band Triple 8, for nine years.
Last we heard... Kimberley hopes to release her debut solo single in December and is rumoured to be in discussions with Gary Barlow to release an album in 2013. Go, Kim!
Nicola admits that she didn’t know what to do when Girls Aloud took a break. She said, “Management were trying to find different things for me to do, this TV work, that TV work, and it was just like, ‘This is really sad.’”
Career moves: First, proud pale-skinned person and ex fake tan fan Nicola concentrated on her make-up range for girls like her, called Dainty Doll. But she still worked on her music and her 2011 debut album, Cinderella Eyes, was critically acclaimed.
Body talk: Naturally slim, Nicola admits that she doesn’t diet and has trouble gaining weight and gets upset when she’s criticised for being a bad role model.
Love life: Nicola has been dating a normal boy, Dubai-born boat builder Charlie Fennell, since 2008.
Last we heard… Lucky old Nicola was handpicked by Rihanna to co-host a hot new fashion show Styled to Rock for Sky Living, alongside British designer Henry Holland. Can’t wait to check it out. Yay, Nicola!
