Transporting her dark wooden furniture from a converted church in the UK countryside to a modern villa in Dubai was somewhat of a major transition for this house-proud Brit. The result, however, is a wonderful colonial feel with a modern twist.
“I love the way our furniture fits into this modern space so nicely,” says Giovanna. But it hasn’t been straightforward, recalling how her huge carved wooden bar from India looked enormous when it first arrived and took some manoeuvring before settling into its new home segregating her dining room and lounge.
Quirky pieces, just like the bar, are dotted about the house, notably Giovanna’s treasured mannequin in dark wood with a contrasting cream bodice, and her antique Chinese chest of drawers, which she claims has “worn beautifully”.
A comfy sofa in the lounge is ideal for the whole family to slouch on – including her two dogs. “Furniture must not just look good, it has to be practical, and our two sofas fit in perfectly with the homely feel of our villa,” says Giovanna.
