Head into the Desert One of Dubai’s biggest playgrounds for the adventure-loving folk is the area surrounding the city. Gently rolling dunes with sun-baked golden sand offer the perfect place for a huge range of activities, from dune-bashing in a four wheel drive to sandboarding, go-karting, horseriding and sunset camel rides. Desert safaris are a popular pastime, where you’ll be whisked away in a luxury 4x4 car for a whirlwind dune-bashing session that’s guaranteed to give you an adrenaline rush (not recommended for those who get motion sickness!), then, depending upon the safari you’ve chosen (see our boxout), you’ll be taken off on a number of different activities, though nearly all of them will take you to a traditional, Bedouin-style camp, where you can experience Arabic hospitality with shisha. Daily tours are available with Arabian Adventures and can be booked by calling 04 303 4888. For overnight desert stays (with a minimum of six people) call 04 283 0889 and if you’re interested in Desert Driving Courses with the Desert Rangers, call 04 422 0044. They run from September to May, with a maximum of two people per car (aged 21 or over) and cost Dhs1,500 (inclusive of an instructor and Land Rover).
