Funnyman Russell Peters Dishes on Returning to Crack Up the Emirates!

29 Sep 2013

Ranked as one of the most successful comics of the last decade, Russell Peters is back in the UAE this October, prepare to be tickled!

Ranked by Forbes magazine as one of the top 10 highest grossing comics in the US in 2009 and 2010, global comedy rockstar Russell Peters returns to the UAE on Wednesday 23 October to perform at the du Arena, Yas Island Abu Dhabi. Peters has spent the past 24 years building a career to become one of the biggest comics in the world, and we interrupted his busy comedy world domination plans to ask him a few questions.

Tell us about your massive world tour.
Well, it all started in 1989... No, you want me to just cut to the chase? OK, here’s what happened, let me break it down for you. Ready? Last year in March 2012, the Notorious tour started in the Middle East. And the act was not really – as far as I’m concerned – ready yet. And subsequently, cut to almost two years later, and the act is more than ripe and I’m bringing it back. And, yeah, there’ll be stuff you may remember from March 2012, but it’s very much more polished and refined, and it’s a better act now.  It is slick. So basically you saw a car with primer on it and now it’s been painted, buffed and driven.

You’re famous for selling out faster than any other comedian. Can you tell our us what your secret is to putting on an amazing show?
I can’t say I sit there ‘I’m going to put on an amazing show’. I just go ‘I’m going to do a show and hopefully the audience like it’. How ‘bout that for humble? Didn’t see that coming.

Where are you right now?
I actually am in Canada right now.

You like to involve as many nationalities in your show as you possibly can. Does that make it harder or easier when you’re here in the UAE?
Always easier. The more mixed the audience, the better the show is.

Do you do a lot of improvisation with the crowd or is it all more or less planned?
No, it’s about 60 per cent improvisation and 40 per cent planned.

That’s awesome. We imagine you have to do your homework about each city you’re going to because you’re performing all over the world?
Yeah, but I just go and it’s more of a vibe. You create a rapport with your audience.

So it’s never the same show from one day to the next? You always have a different vibe and different jokes?
