Five Year Jail Sentence for Oscar Pistorius
Oscar Pistorius has been jailed for five years for killing his girlfriend Reeva Steenkamp. The South African sportsman shot the blonde model four times in the bathroom of his home in Pretoria on Valentine's Day last year after mistaking her for a burglar.
He was ordered to spend five years in prison by Judge Thokozile Masipa in court on today, 21 October, who called her sentence "firm and just, both to society and to the accused."
Pistorius was controversially cleared of murder in September after a high-profile trial, and was convicted of culpable homicide, or manslaughter, because his use of a firearm was deemed "negligent".Pistorius was also found guilty of a separate charge of illegally discharging a firearm in a restaurant, and given a three year sentence, which has been suspended for five years on the condition he is not found guilty of firearm negligence during that period. The athlete was earlier cleared of two other firearms charges - one of firing a gun out of a car sunroof and one of illegally possessing ammunition.
