THE COLLECTION SELECTION
Lucky us, we got a glimpse at the future of Fall fashion last month, thanks to a trip to New York Fashion week. As ever, the coolest brands showcased what’s in store while the fashpack came out in force and we had the privilege of getting the heads up from two of the industry’s most respected designers.
SOPHIA KOKOSALAKI, DESIGNER FOR DIESEL BLACK GOLD
What’s autumn all about?
It’s all about mixing things up through layering. Leather and Mexican denim, scales, skins and graphic knits are big for us, along with tweed looks involving wool, sheepskin and fur, combined with subtle hints of gold.
Where did you get your ideas from?
While the Diesel Black Gold collection has a dark rock chic edge, it still maintains a sense of fun. We looked to vintage B movies for inspiration for a slightly retro, twisted feel.
Any stand out pieces?
We’re using a special cracked leather; a handmade treatment that gives leather a unique, worn and vintage appearance. Who’s going to love this collection?
Middle Eastern ladies love high end, quality products and Diesel Black Gold epitomises this as the range is detailed and luxurious. Those who grew up as girls with the Diesel brand will covet these designs that are casual, but still dressy, with an extra dose of grown up sophistication.

Describe your A/W collection...
When we started making t-shirts 31 years ago, we didn’t even know what fashion was! For each collection the priority is developing Custo Barcelona so the consumer still recognises it. Using materials, graphics and colours that renew and evolve we keep our designs fresh.
What’s key for you?
We’ve been experimenting with our handloom so, for example, we have wool and cotton patchworked together with synthetic leather. Colour is also big this season; green, red, brown, ochre and greys dominate the palette.
The dresses still drive our market but especially with this Fall collection, our separates such as the pants, jackets and sweaters are very strong. Good for winter Dubai evenings!
Who’s the Custo Barcelona woman?
Julia Roberts, Cameron Diaz and Madonna have all worn our clothes; they are for women who like a look that is colourful, creative and contemporary.
AN OPENING CEREMONY
There’s been a huge shift in Kenzo recently. The Parisian label has recently turned to the owners of New York’s coolest shop, Opening Ceremony by Humberto Leon and Carol Lim, to design the Spring/Summer collection. The fashionable two created an edgy, bright and sporty range that is more affordable than Kenzo has ever been before. Think along the lines of fast-moving labels like NYC’s Alexander Wang or Paris’ Isabel Marant. And Spring is just the beginning, wait for the next collection. Sunglasses from Dhs1,350.

IN THE JEANS
London-based label MiH Jeans has created some of the best fitting jeans around. Founded in the 1960s, the cult denim label was a favourite of style icons Jane Birkin and Farrah Fawcett. Now that goddaughter Chloe has taken the reigns, MiH’s designs have been brought back to life with a chic vibe and all-important flattering cut. Not just for jean lovers, there are t-shirts too!
