Veteran Bollywood star Farooq Sheikh has died, aged 65 while in Dubai with his family.

The actor suffered a heart attack late on Friday night and news of his death prompted an outpouring of tributes from other Bollywood actors, including Amitabh Bachchan, who wrote in a series of posts on his Twitter page, "Farooq Sheikh passes away!!? A true gentleman, a wonderful colleague! A quiet honesty about him. Very very sad!... Cannot believe he has gone. There was an absence of any kind of pretence in his demeanour, or towards his work!"

Shah Rukh Khan added: "My biggest regret that I never got to spend time with you... as I had requested. Should have done it earlier. I feel so sorry." Sheikh made his Bollywood debut in the 1973 film Garm Hava and went on to win critical acclaim for his performance in movies including Shatranj Ke Khiladi, Noorie, Chashme Buddoor and Umrao Jaan.

As well as being respected for his work in commercial movies, Sheikh was also widely praised for his work in art-house cinema. His last project was the yet-to-be-released film Club 60. His body will be moved to Mumbai, India once formalities in Dubai have been completed.
