If visiting Antarctica is one of the items on your bucket list, this is the perfect opportunity for you to make that a reality. That’s what you’re in for if you apply for Airbnb’s Antarctic Sabbatical, taking place this November/December.
The month-long trip will allow five volunteers to visit the planets most remote continent to conduct scientific research, to understand the impact of human activities on the environment, and UAE residents are able to apply too.
Led by scientist Kristie Jones-Williams, the expedition will need no formal qualifications except ‘an adventurous spirit, passion for environment and willingness to apply’ according to Airbnb. You will also need to be able to speak conversational English and be available to travel for the month of November and December.
Those who are selected will first fly to Penta Arenas in Chile, where they undergo an immersion training which will include courses on glaciology and field sampling, along with lab work and equipment practice.
While being in the winter wonderland, the citizen scientists will collect snow samples to study how far waste and pollution have travelled across the world.
The trip will also offer them a chance to visit the South Pole, and explore the Antarctic sites such as the Drake Icefall, Charles Peak Windscoop and Elephants Head.
Upon their return, the citizen scientists will then study their findings and work with Ocean Conservancy to become ambassadors to protect the oceans.
If you wish to apply and have a daring spirit to take on the unforgiving wintery conditions, you can do so via airbnb.ae/sabbatical and will need to complete their application by 8 October.
