Ahlan! chatted to the Ships in the Night singer before his gig at Sandance on Friday

You’re coming to Dubai to play at Sandance, which is a beach festival. Is this a good match for your music and why?
I hope so. I have never been to Dubai so I'm excited to visit. I have heard so much about the city. I think my music will be a nice intimate moment amidst all the other great acts that will be there.

What do you think of the other Sandance performers – The Fray and DJ Fresh?
When I first saw the lineup, I noticed there were going to be lots of different kinds of artists. It should keep everyone on their toes and be exciting! I have known The Fray guys for a long time, I supported their first ever club tour. We have both come a long way.

This gig is the only non-US date on your current tour. Why Dubai?
This was the only international show that really worked for my schedule. I wish I had more opportunities to get outside the US and play, but usually I end up wearing myself out with all the travel. Dubai has a special allure I couldn't pass up.

Would you ever consider creating a stage name?
No, I never really have. I started out by selling CDs out of the trunk of my car to friends. I didn't really mean for it to turn into a career or a brand, it was just something I loved doing. Maybe I should switch it up and go by DJ STALE.

How has life changed for you after tracks like Ships in the Night (our personal fave) went mainstream?
Radio has definitely changed everything for me. I remember playing a radio show at the first station that had played my music, and all these people showed up and sang along.

Your songs have appeared on TV Shows such as The Hills, Bones, Scrubs and The Vampire Diaries. Are these shows you actually watch?
Not really, I actually watch strange TV shows. I get really into poker and golf on TV. I also really get into cooking shows. Lately I have been watching Breaking Bad. It's pretty dark.

You’ve toured with people like John Mayer and Sheryl Crow. Who was your fave to tour with and why?
John was great because I was brand new to the touring world so I learned a lot from him. I loved touring with Keane on my last record as well.

Who are your musical inspirations and why?
I often sit and wonder what kind of records Paul Simon, Bruce Springsteen, and Kanye West would make together. I love stories and beats.

What’s your fave genre of music to perform out of rock, folk and hip hop?
Honestly, I pull from all those types of music. Lately I have been way into hip hop. Tribe Called Quest is as good as it gets.

What’s the most bizarre instrument you play?

Is a harmonica bizarre?

What are your plans after this tour?
I plan on spending time in Nashville as I need to catch up with friends. Also, I have started working on a new record. I'm feeling really inspired lately!

Finally, any words for your fans or future fans out in the UAE?
I can't wait to be there. I hope to makes some friends and come back.
