The Fray's lead singer opens up about music, tap dancing and coffee shop aspirations ahead of the band's gig at Sandance

We’re really excited to see The Fray perform at Sandance. Are you looking forward to coming out?
We’re super stoked actually. We’ve wanted to come to the Middle East to play for a long time. I’ve visited a few places but never played any music. I’ve always thought of Dubai as a sort of oasis, right on the water, crazy cool architecture, good art and great kebabs.

Out of all your songs, which is your fave and why?
Probably a song called Say When. There’s a lyric in there towards the end of the last verse that I’m really proud of. It sums up my views on foreign policy, religion, tolerance and maybe even family dynamics. Check it out.

What would you be doing if you weren’t a musician?
I’d probably open up a coffee shop in Denver with an Ethiopian buddy of mine. He makes this killer breakfast in a cup and Ethiopian coffee is to die for. I worked my way through college in a coffee shop. I’d like to make some punk college kid have to wake up at 3:45am instead of me then I could leisurely roll in around 10:30am and boss him around, leave for a three-hour lunch and maybe come back in the afternoon, maybe not.

We hear you were a keen tap dancer and figure skater as a child. If an opportunity to take part in a TV show such as Dancing on Ice came up, would you take it?
[laughs] How’d you dig that up? I don’t think so, unless it paid really really well and I got a lifetime supply of bodyguards to beat people up who make fun of me.
