Electric vehicles are being charged up while driving in new tests in Dubai
Trials in Dubai Silicon Oasis have seen electric vehicles charged whilst moving, in special roads that the RTA has built.
The incredible technology is being trialled to roll out across the city, with buses operating on the streets that top up their batteries whilst in motion.
RTA's Director General, HE Mattar Mohammed Al Tayer says: “This project is one of RTA’s initiatives to promote the use of environmentally-friendly vehicles and sustainable transport means. It complements Dubai Integrated Energy Strategy 2030, Dubai Plan 2021, and the UAE Vision 2021."
The vehicles are charged by a power-grid built underneath the road, Al Tayer explains: "The initial phase covers preparing the infrastructure and laying an embedded power-charging grid underneath a 60-metre road strip at the Dubai Silicon Oasis for the dynamic wireless charging of electric vehicles and buses in motion.
“RTA has tested an electric vehicle and a bus on this path, and results proved a highly efficient wireless charging system comparable with the cable charging. Moreover, the electromagnetic level on board was within the accepted global range."
Dubai will also host more than 300 electric vehicle charging stations by the end of 2020, in its move to become a more sustainable, smart city.
