Stop those mince pies sitting on your thighs with our guide to Dubai’s best post-indulgence workouts

Stand Up Paddling (SUP)
At: Surf Dubai, Umm Suqeim Public Beach
They say: Stand up Paddling is a unique way of getting fit and staying in shape as it involves an isometric workout. Trainers will teach you the correct stance and paddling technique which promotes balance, strength, overall fitness and really focuses on your core muscle groups.
We say: You’ll feel this in your thighs! There’s a reason Jennifer Aniston is a fan, as it gives you legs of steel and develops your core muscles and balance.
Result: Expect to have shaky pins once you get back on land - this is an incredible workout for your lower body. Professionals can burn 1000 calories per hour, while mere mortals are looking at around 500 calories.
One class equals: Two mugs of mulled wine.

Bikram Yoga
At: Club Stretch, Dubai
They say: It is a challenging, exciting, and vigorous 90-minute series created for everyone, regardless of your fitness level. The series systematically moves fresh, oxygenated blood to one hundred percent of your body, restoring and maintaining a healthy system.
We say: You will sweat! It’s not a workout for those of you adverse to getting red faced and hot, but boy does it make you feel good in the long run.
Result: It depends on how hard you work, but the calorie burn can be anywhere between 550 and a massive 700 calories per hour and a half session.
One class equals: One portion of turkey, a helping of roast potatoes, and roast parsnips. If you hit 700 calories, add a small portion of Christmas pud.

Bollywood Dance
At: DUCTAC, Mall of the Emirates
They say: Nisha’s Bollywood dance class is a vibrant, high energy class that starts with a unique warm up designed to increase flexibility and strength. It includes technical warm ups and intense stretching.
We say: As well as toning up and learning a few moves, this class is a seriously fun way to spend an evening. The best part? Although you’ll realise the next day that you worked a few muscles, it doesn’t feel like it at the time.
Result: A Bollywood class can burn up to 500 calories per hour, depending on how hard you strut your stuff. You’ll feel it in your thighs and hips.
One class equals: Two helpings of trifle, complete with lashings of cream and custard.

Xtend Barre
At: Real Pilates, Jumeirah
They say: The Xtend Barre system sculpts the body proportionally so that all your bits are equally challenged. This workout serves to strengthen, lengthen, and stretch the body from top to bottom, from inside out. The end result is a long and lean physique, without added bulk.
We say: We thought this class would be really easy, but it wasn’t. It really works your thighs, bum and core - trust us, you’ll feel a deep inner burn after this one.
Result: Expect to ache the day afterwards, but you’ll already feel leaner and longer (hooray). The calorie burn varies from person to person, but expect to see your body become leaner with regular work.
One class equals: Two slices of cake.

At: Core Direction, Dubai
They say: The class focuses on ‘compound exercises’ or movements, meaning it works a number of the big muscle groups in one go. The result is a very efficient session as a full body workout, significantly increasing your metabolism.
We say: It’s hard work. The exercises change every time so you never get used to doing one thing and it works every muscle group in your body.
Result: The calorie burn for this class is 500 per hour (depending on your weight, fitness levels etc), with an added bonus of increasing muscle tone and general fitness. The class increases your metabolism, so the total calorie burn is far higher than just what you work off in class.
One class equals: Two mince pies.
