WHAT’S INVOLVED: Ever wondered how the French look so slim and trim? Well for many it could be that they’ve been on the Dukan Diet. An eponymous book based on the diet is said to be a best seller in France claiming to have helped 5million lose weight! Now that’s a lofty boast. Jennifer Lopez and Gisele Bündchen reportedly lost their baby weight through this diet. Created by French physician Pierre Dukan it consists of a four-phase, high-protein, low-calorie plan. You’re allowed to eat what you want at any time provided that what you’re eating is lean protein, oat bran and litres of water combined with daily walks of at least 20 minutes.

Diet in Phase one (Attack): Unlimited protein, along with 1.5 tablespoons of oat bran and 1.5 litres of water daily.

Diet in Phase two (Cruise): Unlimited amounts of 28 non-starchy vegetables - so no potatoes, carrots, peas, corn - daily along with a core diet of unlimited lean/low-fat protein and 2 tablespoons of oat bran.

Diet in Phase three (Consolidation): Unlimited protein again and vegetables daily, along with one piece of low-sugar fruit, two slices of whole-grain bread, and one portion of hard cheese.

Diet in Phase four (Stabilisation): This is an important maintenance stage. Go back to your diet from phase one.

VERDICT: The book warns that dieters may suffer from bad breath, constipation, dry mouth, and fatigue, which are all consequences of low-carb, high-protein diets. “Dukan is really little more than an Atkins-type programme with a few twists. The major one being that despite being high-protein it is not high-fat,” explains Ryan Penny, Clinical Nutritionist and Conditioning Coach for The Wellness Brothers. “As with Atkins, the risk for bad breath, constipation and weakness with overdoing exercise (more than about 20 minutes usually) are the typical short term problems.”
