Duchess Kate - Love or Hate?
She’s topped international best-dressed lists, started fashion trends in their droves, and has the midas touch on every garment she wears. But when it comes to the Duchess of Cambridge, and her much-imitated style, is Kate Middleton the fashion equivalent of Marmite? Star Style reveals her Hollywood raters and haters...
She’s never been one to bite her tongue on the subject of style. But legendary British fashion designer Vivienne Westwood has made no secret of the fact she sees Kate Middleton as nothing more than Middle-of-the-road. “I would’ve loved to have dressed Kate,” explained Dame Viv at the start of the year. “But I have to wait until she catches up a bit somewhere with style.” Ouch! Yet, it’s not just Kate’s style sensibilities that leave the infamous designer cold – it’s her penchant for kohl. The fiery fashionista revealed, “I think she’s got a problem with eye make-up. The sharp line around her eyes makes her look hard.” Adding, “Either she should be smudgy or wear none… I just think she should be an extraordinary woman, wherever she gets her clothes or make-up done.” We’re guessing Kate won’t be wearing Westwood any time soon then?
Kate may have just made it onto Vanity Fair’s best dressed list but Fashion Police judge Kelly Osbourne believes the Duchess’ style status is a right-royal disaster. Dissing her “thrifty” outfit choices, Kelly has slated Kate’s love of recycling her favourite wardrobe staples. “In England, they’re like, ‘ Look how thrifty she’s being, showing the British public that the royals are in recession as well’. Only in America, they call it a faux pas.” And while Kate has been widely praised for mixing and matching her much-loved clothing on more than one occasion, including the recent wedding of Zara Phillips and Mike Tindall, 26-year-old Kelly thinks Kate should be flying the British flag for frock shopping. “I’m sorry, but if I’m going to be the future Queen of England, I can at least get a new dress every day,” ranted Kelly. Nothing like frittering away tax-payers hard earned cash, eh Kel?
Another designer decidedly nonplussed about the ‘Royal wedding dress’ hysteria was Matthew. Despite releasing his very own line of bridal wear just after Kate and William were engaged, the British designer claimed creating Middleton’s dress just wasn’t his thing. “Kate isn’t a fashion bunny,” he spilled after the engagement was officially announced.” I don’t know why everyone in fashion is waiting to see what she wears. I’m thinking ‘get over it!” We’re sure Alexander McQueen’s Sarah Burton was thrilled he felt that way.
Viktor and Rolf
Kate’s impossibly bouncy barnet has sparked millions of copycat do’s across the globe, but fashion power duo Viktor and Rolf aren’t loving her locks. “We’d like to see her with different make-up and hair,” revealed the identikit designers. And while they appear to be not quite so scathing in their opinions, like blunt-speaking Vivienne Westwood, a make-over would be top of their to-do list should the Dutch fashion designers ever get their hands on the Duchess. “Less eyeliner, less hair,” they explained. “It would bring out her natural beauty.”
Her Fashion Police co-star Kelly Osbourne may be unimpressed by K-Middy’s wardrobe, but E! presenter Guliana Rancic thinks Kate’s just great! “I think it’s hard to dress knowing the whole world will look at you and judge you, but she’s doing an excellent job.” And as far as her hair goes style-obsessive Guliana and Dutch fashionistas Viktor & Rolf couldn’t be further apart in the follicle debate. “She has a gorgeous head of hair,” said Guliana, “which should be left down to blow in the wind at all times.”
Celebrity stylist Rachel is responsible for making half of Hollywood red-carpet fabulous, but even she admits Kate won’t be needing any help from her in the future. “I would love for her to be my client, but clearly she doesn’t need a stylist,” she recently gushed, no doubt losing herself business. Seriously impressed with Kate’s Canadian tour wardrobe, which saw the Duchess rock everything from high street fave Reiss to cutting-edge couture, Rachel openly praised the style queen, “Kate was beyond chic, and absolutely stunning. She’s very comfortable and confident in who she is and her style, and I love that she’s doing it on her own.”
Kate may be posher than Posh in real life, but Victoria Beckham is a big fan of the Duchess’ polished and preppy style – and became even more so when it was revealed K-Mid was planning to stock up on Victoria’s form-fitting collection for her personal wardrobe. “It’s tremendously exciting, and I would be honoured if she chose to wear my designs,” revealed Mrs Beckham. “I admire her tremendously. She’s a beautiful young girl, she has a wonderful figure and I think she wears clothes beautifully.”
He rarely has a good word to say about anyone other than his favourite fashion muses, but Chanel supremo Karl Lagerfeld has joined the legion of followers in Kate’s fashion fan club. “She is chic in the way the position needs,” said the famously acerbic fashion designer. “She is very different from Princess Diana, and seems a very well-balanced and happy person who is both beautiful and elegant.” High praise indeed from the High Priest of fashion put-downs.
