The first Dubai World Cup at Meydan started off in style, and with lots of excitement, as expected. It also started off with an unexpected result. The first race of the day, the Dubai Kahyala Classic race, was won by Jaafer, owned by Shaikh Khalifa Bin Mohammad Bin Khalifa Al Thani. The Purebred Arabians $250,000 race was sponsored by Emaar. No Risk Al Maury, one of the favourites to win, came in second.
Next up was the $1 million Emirates-NBD sponsored Al Quoz Sprint race. And this was won by Joy and Fun, owned by Wong Chun Nam and his wife.
In the third race, the $1 million Godolphin Mile race, sponsored by Etisalat, Goldolphin-owned Calming Influence took home top honours.
In the fourth race, the $2 million UAE Derby, Musir, owned by Shaikh Mohammad Bin Khalifa Al Maktoum, was the winner. The UAE Derby was sponsored by the Saeed and Mohammed Al Naboodah Group.
Next up was the $2 million Dubai Golden Shaheen, sponsored by Gulf News. The race was won in spectacular fashion by Kinsale King, owned by Sheehy LLC. The win was all the more fun as thrilled jockey Carl OCallghan danced when he received his prize.
The Dubai Duty Free race, sponsored by Dubai Duty Free, with a $5 million purse, was won by Al Shemali, owned by Shaikh Hamdan Bin Mohammad Bin Rashid Al Maktoum.
