Dubai Tram Will Link JBR, JLT-Marina and Al Sofouh-Palm Jumeirah by 2014

Sign us up for the tram! The RTA and Serco have just signed a 75-month contract for the operation of the Dubai Tram. The project will connect JBR, Marina and Al Sufouh areas, meaning a lot more public transport for us!

The preparation phase is set to last 15 months and residents can expect the Dubai Tram to be operational by late next year (2014)

The world’s first tramway project powered by a ground-based electric supply system extending along the track, Dubai Tram is expected to have about 27,000 rides per day at the start of operations next year. There will be 11 trams in the initial phase and 14 trams in phase two to make a total of 25 operating trams.

The Dubai Tramway extends 14.6km along Al Sufouh Road and the initial phase of this project looks at the construction of a 10.6kn-long track starting from Dubai Marina and extending up to the Tram Depot near Dubai Police Academy.

By the year 2020, it will offer up to 66,000 rides per day.
