At Gitex, the biggest tech show in the Middle East held at the World Trade Centre, Dubai’s Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) presented the virtual Nol card to the public on Sunday.
Set to roll out in the third quarter of 2020, Nol card users will be able to purchase the virtual public transport card and keep it on their phones instead of in their wallets, enabling the public to top-up funds on their Nol card directly from their credit card, saving time and plastic. It's part of a greater plan by the RTA to enable smooth payment of public transport fares as well as other payments such as parking fees, shopping at certain retail outlets and refuling stations.
Once the feature has been downloaded and activated on the rider’s smartphone, they will be able to use their virtual Nol card across Dubai metro, bus, tram and marine transport services. The new initiative is yet another step in the government’s plan to make Dubai the smartest city in the world.
