Dubai International Airport was the third busiest airport in the world last year, moving up from its sixth place ranking in the previous year.
Based on reports from 1,144 airports worldwide, Airports Council International’s passenger traffic results for the most-travelled airports in 2015 showed that total traffic at Dubai grew by a massive 10.7 percent last year.
The airport is also the world’s busiest in terms of international passengers ahead of London-Heathrow.
Dubai, which saw more than 78 million passengers in 2015, has become the point that connects long-haul international flights from east and west, north and south.
The ACI report showed that the top spot continues to belong to Atlanta-Hartsfield-Jackson, which saw 5.5 percent growth to over 100 million passengers in 2015. Behind Atlanta came Beijing with almost 90 million passengers, while Chicago and Tokyo rounded out the top five busiest airports in the world.
The world’s largest air cargo hub continues to be Hong Kong, ahead of Memphis and Shanghai. Dubai ranked sixth while Doha entered the top 20 after a jump of 46 percent in air cargo volumes in 2015.
