Dr Luke Denies SONY Split
It seems that Dr Luke's court battle with Kesha is beginning to take a toll on his career. The top producer has been embroiled in a bitter fracas with Tik Tok star Kesha, who was recently denied her bid to terminate her contract with Sony and its subsidiary, Luke's Kemosabe Records, despite accusing the hit-maker of sexual and emotional abuse.
On Wednesday, reports surfaced alleging label chiefs were beginning to succumb to the pressure, suggesting they were preparing to cut ties with Dr Luke one year before his own contract is set to expire.
However, an attorney for Dr Luke insists the reports are false, and he is still signed with the top label.
"This is not true," Dr Luke's lawyer said in a statement. "Luke has an excellent relationship with Sony. His representatives are in regular contact with executives at the highest levels at Sony and this has never come up."
Kesha has garnered support from fans and celebrities alike during her ordeal, including vocal demonstrators who have staged protests outside of Sony's New York headquarters, demanding the singer be released from her contract.
Around 35 demonstrators gathered to deliver various petitions, boasting more than 411,000 signatures, backing Kesha's cause, while some held up signs reading, "Free Kesha Now". They also chanted, "Do the right thing!" and "People over profits!" as they danced to the 29-year-old's songs, according to The Associated Press.
Sony's lawyer, Scott A. Edelman, previously maintained the firm couldn't give Kesha what she wanted, as executives are ‘not in a position to terminate’ the contract the singer signed with Dr Luke a decade ago.
"Sony is doing everything it can to support the artist in these circumstances, but is legally unable to terminate the contract to which it is not a party," he added to the New York Times.
