If it sounds too good to be true, it's because it probably is

European airline Ryanair, which flies to the Middle East, has warned travellers against a new scam that’s currently circulating on WhatsApp.

The fake promotion reads: “Congratulations! You have been qualified to obtain two free tickets.” Users are then requested to pass on the message to 15 WhatsApp friends or groups and click on “claim tickets” to enter their details and redeem their prize.

Ryanair took to social media on earlier this week to alert customers about the fraudulent message, and confirmed the company is not active on WhatsApp.

It’s certainly not the first time Whatsapp users have been scammed by “airlines”. Fake Emirates promotions have repeatedly done the rounds in recent years.

WhatsApp has supplied some guidelines to help its users avoid scams. Alarm bells should go off when:

1. The message gives instructions to forward the message.
2. The message claims you can avoid account suspension if you forward the message.
3. The message includes a prize or gift.

If you receive a message like this, simply block the sender, disregard the message and delete it, according to WhatsApp.
