After the excitement of Walt Disney World, this journey will keep the little ones and adults alike entertained. Far from your average cruise, the Disney Wonder is a magical ship that measures the length of Main Street USA, and is decorated in Mickey’s signature colours (red, black and yellow) with the iconic Mickey silhouettes. Oh, and nothing beats the joy you’ll feel when you hear the boat’s iconic horn that blasts out When You Wish Upon a Star! In addition to the Bahamas, the ship also travels to destinations including Alaska and the Caribbean.
You’ll bump into Disney characters all over the ship, we had a run-in with Pluto on the stairs, and there’s a farewell ceremony where you can see them all, too!
Sleeping at Sea
With 875 staterooms across 11 passenger decks, this ship features a variety of lodging options: Concierge, Verandah, Oceanview and Inside. We had a spacious Verandah room, complete with a double bed, a TV loaded with every Disney movie you could imagine and a balcony with gorgeous views of the sea. Designed for families of three to five, the room has sofa beds and a pull-down bed from the ceiling. INFO: Inside Staterooms on the Disney Wonder start from Dhs6,960, excluding taxes, disneycruise.disney.go.com
You’ll never be bored on-board as the ship features a theatre and cinema, among other attractions. Enjoy Broadway-calibre shows almost every evening with fabulous performances. We were treated to watching The Golden Mickeys (a Hollywood-style awards show with songs and performances), Disney Dreams – An Enchanted Classic with a Peter Pan theme that features performances of Disney classics and the brand new Frozen, A Musical Spectacular where you’ll see the tale brought to life with puppets and actors. Get ready to hear all your fave songs from the film, plus state-of-the-art technology that’ll leave you speechless. During days at sea, head to the cinema to watch the latest Disney releases in 3D, or enjoy the weather and catch a movie at the poolside cinema.
Make a Splash
The Disney Wonder features swimming pools for families, children and adults, along with water play areas, and its very own water slide ‘Twist ‘n’ Spout’.
Dine in Style
There are a huge selection of restaurants aboard, ranging from the super-fancy Palo with some of the tastiest Italian food we’ve ever tried (so make the most of it while you’re there), to Cabanas, which is the go-to spot for breakfast with a huge buffet complete with Mickey waffles! There are also themed restaurants where you’re treated to musical performances and appearances from Disney characters. The restaurants offering this experience were Tiana’s Place, from The Princess and the Frog, Triton’s, from The Little Mermaid, and our personal favourite, Animator’s Palate, with screens showing Disney characters being sketched entertaining you as you eat, and a special appearance from Fantasia Mickey at the end, too. The restaurants also feature ‘rotational dining’ where you’re assigned a member of wait staff to your table, who will be with you when you visit any of the themed restaurants – perfect for the fussy eaters or anyone with dietary requirements as they’ll know your likes and dislikes from the first evening.
Get ready for the popular Pirate Party, which sees everyone on deck in fancy dress (take little ones to the Bibbidi Bobbidi Boutique to experience a magical makeover) for a show featuring Captain Jack Sparrow, the Disney crew in their finest pirate attire and fireworks at sea – the casing is made of seaweed to ensure there’s no pollution! In addition to this entertaining evening, there’s plenty for adults to enjoy after a tiring day with the little ones. After Hours is the adult-only area featuring the Crown & Fin pub, complete with pub quizzes and some Mary Poppins memorabilia (to keep with the British theme). Additionally, you’ll find the Cadillac Lounge and Azure, the ‘nightclub’ where you can request all of your fave songs and dance the night away with your friends.
There’s plenty to do and see on the island, but our top tips are to see the straw market where you can get your hands on souvenirs galore, stroll through the streets and see plenty of pretty houses, and find a spot by the sea to relax at. For a taste of home, head to The Atlantis Paradise Island, the original resort.
See Disney’s private island before everyone else by taking part in the fun 5k, which you can run or walk. We spent the rest of the wonderful day enjoying the scenic views from the bar and cycling around the pristine island in the sunshine. Bliss! There are water sports, restaurants and sunbeds by the sea, too.
