Does the globally acclaimed celebrity hotspot live up to its international counterparts?

When we first heard, back in October, that celebrity hotspot STK was about to open at the new Rixos Premium in Jumeirah Beach Residence, we were already mentally preparing for a three- week waiting list and queues around the block. But October came and went, as did November, and there was still no STK. When it finally opened its doors on Fri 1 Dec, we were naturally among the first to make a reservation. But was it worth the wait? 

With venues in London, Vegas, and Ibiza, the international STK franchises have built up quite the reputation for incredible steak and a fine-dining-meets-party atmosphere, boasting celebrity clientele including the likes of Adam Sandler, Hailey Baldwin, and Courteney Cox. So, when we arrive at 8pm on a Wednesday night, we expect to be kicking o the weekend early and in style. But the restaurant is fairly empty. We put that down to the fact it’s only been open for a couple of weeks. 

The restaurant has a chic, lounge-like feel, with soft lighting, cosy booths, and a resident DJ playing old-school R ‘n’ B tunes throughout the evening. But we’re here for the food, right? At the recommendation of our extremely informative and upbeat waitress, we order the warm asparagus with shaved comté cheese (crunchy, tasty – great) and burrata and heirloom tomato salad (creamy and tart in all the right parts). We also try the Lil’ Brgs, two sliders crafted from USDA beef and served with STK’s special sauce. These set us up perfectly for our main course – a big, juicy steak, obvs.

While there’s plenty on the menu for non-meat- eaters – think oysters on ice, a raw bar, passion fruit miso black cod, and a leek and potato pot pie – as the name dictates, this restaurant is far more suited to carnivores. Steaks come in various sizes and cuts, including American, Japanese, and Australian Wagyu. We opt for a medium USDA prime fillet and USDA prime ribeye served with the STK bold sauce, and sharing sides of mac and cheese, parmesan tru le fries, and creamed spinach (we don’t hold back). The ribeye is everything a steak should be – tender and practically melting in our mouths. The side dishes are also all on point. Sadly, the fillet is slightly overcooked.

We’re almost ready to be rolled out, but we manage to leave a little room for the crisp crème brûlée. It’s delicious – the perfect end to a delightful meal. Now we’re just looking forward to seeing if Dubai’s newest hotspot can live up to its international counterparts by throwing one heck of party on weekends...
