Known for its after-dinner atmosphere, Miss Lily’s food is actually the star of the show, as we found out when we popped in to the venue for dinner.
The Caribbean oasis is located on the fifth floor of the Sheraton Grand Hotel in Dubai. We arrive and are greeted by a super-friendly hostess who takes us to our booth. The décor is bright, fun and authentic. Mismatched tables and chairs give the place a homely feel.
We take the advice of our waitress and start with jerk corn (shaved off the cob because, seriously, who looks good gnawing it?) and ackee hummus. The grilled corn, mixed with jerk mayo and toasted coconut, is a taste sensation. We dip into the hummus with ackee, which is gritty and salty, making it a delightful companion to the smooth hummus.
For the main course, we share the slow-roasted pimento short rib with a side of crispy okra and potato, and some curiously named ‘festivals’. A huge plate arrives with the biggest rib we have ever seen. Slabs of tender, juicy beef lie resting on the bone, which is soaked in a rich jus. Roasted scallions and mushrooms lay beneath the meaty mountain. This dish will make any meat fan very happy.
The festivals also arrive and are not, sadly, a party in a pot. They are, in fact, savoury dumplings. Perfect for mopping up all of that meaty sauce. The okra and potatoes are a pleasant texture change and include a dollop of spicy Scotch bonnet mayo. After many mouthfuls, we are finally forced to admit defeat, having to leave a portion of the rib. It’s that big.
Even though we’ve had our fill, dessert proves too tempting and we dive into a plate of soft chocolate cookies with salted caramel ice cream. Miss Lily’s is a party for the senses and one to be shared with your pals.
