Vibrant – in every way. That’s the best way to describe this self-proclaimed ‘mischievous’ arrival on the city’s Indian cuisine scene that packs a punch both visually and to your tastebuds. Banish any preconceptions of the usual curry house as Masti is a very different beast. It doesn’t pretend to be authentic or traditional – it’s thoroughly modern and innovative, from its fusing of different plates to its presentation. The Michelin-starred kitchen superstar, chef Hari Nayak, is usually known for innovative blending of his native Korean and modern Japanese flavours, but in this space, which encompasses two terraces and a sleek main restaurant (and an in-house DJ), the focus is definitely on the latter.
The space itself is decked out in jewel tones – and if the weather was a little cooler, al fresco dining looking out at the Dubai skyline on one side and the azure beach on the other would definitely appeal. But we sat happily ensconced inside – upstairs is the licensed area – surrounded by bright cushions, quirky interior touches and a sophisticated bar.
The menu is mammoth so it’s worth taking some guidance from the friendly staff; from the spiced beetroot arancini and tuna tartare bhel puri to pulled tandoori chicken bao, butter chicken pizza and tamarind beef ribs, each concoction is a revelation in taste and plating. There’s also plenty of theatrical table-side action and billowing dry ice, so get your cameras ready for the condensed milk and lotus dessert. One thing is for sure; you’ve definitely never tried any of these dishes elsewhere as this unique offering is one-of-a-kind and certainly worth a trip.
