Dinner Review: Maiden Shanghai, Viceroy The Palm

Thanks to a variety of top notch restaurants, there are plenty of reasons to visit Palm Jumeirah’s new It spot, Viceroy The Palm. However, if you’re looking for traditional Chinese dishes with a creative twist, Maiden Shanghai should be your first stop.

Spread across different floors, it has a variety of dining areas and outdoor terraces, indoor bar, private dining rooms and even an opulent rooftop terrace. The décor fuses antique Chinese with modern design, creating a space that feels open yet somehow still cosy and connected.

For starters, we opt for the steamed spinach in sesame sauce and Wagyu beef puffs. The cold spinach is presented in a magnificent thick stem-like presentation, alongside a nutty sesame sauce. Healthy AND delicious. The pie-like beef puffs on the other hand are warm, fluffy and saucy. Our only complaint? We wish it was a bigger main meal. It’s that good.

First to arrive of the mains is the five spice Tsingtao beer braised beef short ribs in Ching Kiang vinegar sauce, also known as the best short ribs we’ve ever tasted. The meat feast, served on the bone, is so tender and delicious, we practically ignore our side portion of jasmine rice.

We also try the stir fried cuttlefish and scallops with truffle oil. Despite the rich aroma of the truffle oil surrounding our table (wohoo, lucky us!), the meal is light and easy on the palate. We wouldn’t go as far as calling it bland, but we definitely recommend the dish if you’re avoiding rich foods.

Somehow, despite all this, our waiter convinces us to try dessert. We insist we’ll only try a spoon or two of the highly-recommended chocolate mousse. Does that happen? Obviously not. It’s the thick, creamy and moist kind of mousse that you only find once in a lifetime, much like love. So yes, we finish it in record time. It’s the most delicious mousse EVER.

It’s also worth noting that the service, from the door and the bar to the table, is impeccable. Plus the kitchen operates at record-speed without sacrificing quality. In fact, we doubt that most Chinese takeout spots are even this fast. Totes impressed. INFO: No 1 Palm Jumeirah, Dubai, 04 247 5222, viceroyhotelsandresorts.com
