We arrive at Fume, which is located on level 1 of the action-packed Marina haunt Pier 7, and are escorted to a window table that a ords us gorgeous views of the boat-lined bay.
The restaurant feels cool and quirky, with cute touches such as mismatched teapots and copper pans hanging up. With influences from European travels as well as North and South-East Asia, we already know the menu is a celebration of salty, sweet and sour flavours, but to really get a taste we are told we will be dining on small plates of many of the restaurant’s faves. Sounds good to us! Thankfully, we have turned up wearing our roomiest trousers.
We begin with a varied selection of starters, including the buttermilk fried chicken, which is an all-round winner. Impossible to fool anyone into believing these crispy bites are healthy but, TBH, who cares? The chicken is tender, wrapped in a thick coating of crispy batter and served with a creamy spiced mayo dip. We tentatively try the steak tartare with a slow- cooked egg. It’s mildly spiced and flavoursome. The crispy duck salad with cubes of juicy watermelon is surprisingly good, the flavours working well together, especially when teamed with salty hoisin sauce.
Starters are cleared and fairly soon after our table is heaving again, this time main courses. We split the pulled beef brisket bun and promptly devour the whole thing. The bun is fresh and the meat tender and juicy. Warning: it’s also very garlicky so be careful if you’re on a date! Hot smoked salmon is perfectly paired with sour pickled cucumber and sweet teriyaki sauce. The honey and chilli marinated chicken is a tad oily and still contains bones. We nibble, but decide to leave that
in favour of finishing the beef bun with lip- smacking vinegar slaw. You’d be right to think that at this point we would have struggled to find room for dessert. But when a 12-inch salted caramel chocolate éclair arrives, we are somehow able to accommodate it. It’s baked to perfection, packed with moreish salty caramel and whipped cream. A date and banana pudding with vanilla ice cream and thick dolce du leche-like custard is equally delicious and reminds of puddings our mums would serve after a Sunday roast... albeit slightly better (soz, mum).
With comfort food and a fun sharing element, we think Fume is a great place to go with mates for a good ol’ natter and cheat-day treats.
