Dinner Review: BiCE, Hilton JBR
Feeling fancy? Then get yourself down to BiCE for an Italian feast. The beautiful restaurant is definitely swish enough to take the ‘rents. Our table is right by the window giving us a gorge view of the twinkling lights of the Marina.
Sous chef Marco Cennamo pops over to introduce himself and recommend an amuse boushe to begin with. A small glass bowl of whipped burrata mousse with truffled caviar and the teeniest sunblush tomato arrives. It’s light, creamy and packed with flavour. Just the thing to start our dinner.
The bread bowl that follows is an authentic Italian carb-fest. It arrives filled with fresh ciabatta. There’s also a cone of traditional grissini for anyone wanting some crunch. We dip chunks of soft bread into black olive tapenade and chilli olive oil whilst deciding on what to scoff next. We start with a sharing feast of dishes because that’s what friends do, right? There are balls of Saffron halve and share with a pal, a gooey, melting bowl of baked goats cheese with marinated peppers and balsamic and the chef’s recommendation of grilled octopus with sweet paprika potato and olives. Tasty, tender and totally delish it’s safe to say we are suckers for the octopus but the surprise star of our starters has to be the endives and Gorgonzola salad drizzled with truffle honey. Punchy sweet honey and crunchy endives… Seriously, even the most carnivorous of diners would die over this tasty trio of flavours.
For mains we stray from the sharing path, choosing individual plates. The wild mushroom risotto is creamy, dreamy and also very filling, so a great option. If you missed lunch, the veal tenderloin with foie gras sauce and morels (the fancy fungus) atop a bed of creamed potatoes, the meat is so tender our knives require little persuasion to cut it. Pizza fans will love BiCE’s new gourmet pizza menu. We pick the burratina version. It arrives looking fresh and delicious with a giant ball of creamy burrata in the centre. We stare at it for a few seconds, unable to comprehend the glory that is that big ol’ ball of cheese. One full pizza is great to share if you’ve already indulged in starters. If you’re famished, just dive right in and order one for yourself. Nobody will judge you at BiCE. In fact, we think the Italian chefs will probably shed a tear of joy, tbh.
Even though waistbands are by now at breaking point, we finish with a warm chocolate fondant pudding. YOLO.
