Dinner Review: Axe House, Cluster P, JLT
When we heard that popular JLT hotspot Cocktail Kitchen was closing its doors, we were pretty gutted. Fortunately, our tears were short lived, because craft hops bar Axe House has taken its place.
The slightly grittier British pub is famous for its wholesome dishes, friendly neighbourhood atmosphere and, of course, large selection of craft hops. Also, the new venue is brought to you by the same people behind Lucky Voice Dubai, so you know it’s going to be good.
The menu is largely divided into three sections, named after markets in London. Billingsgate, which is a famous seafood market, features fish pie, king prawns and so forth. Columbia Road, famous for its veggies, is where you will find the likes of veggie sausages, three bean chilli and spinach tagliatelle. Last but not least, Smithfield features a range of meaty treats, from the Donatella of kebabs to the spicy chicken burger.
There’s also a small eats menu. To start, we tuck into the crispy cauliflower and halloumi fries. The cauliflower is an instant hit when dipped into the blue cheese sauce, and the halloumi cheese is fried to perfection.
For mains, our vegetarian friend (who is thrilled with the menu’s large amount of veggie options, FYI) tries the veggie sausages and mash. The mushroom sausages are flavourful and go down a treat. We head straight to Smithfield for a juicy steak. We opt for the 200g tenderloin with truffle mash on the side. It’s the perfect combination, and we pretty much lick out the mash bowl.
The star of the show is undoubtedly the chocolate smash. Serving four to six people, it’s a massive chocolate concoction which you break with a hammer. Inside is a variety of pick ‘n’ mix candies mixed with chocolate brownie, cake and practically everything that contains sugar. It’s delicious, enormous, and worth every calorie.
