RESTAURANT REVIEW: Crab Tavern, Media One Hotel
Bare wood and distressed leather interiors give this new 9th-floor haunt a comfy laid-back vibe. Despite Monday typically being a quiet night, when I visited, the place was abuzz with chatter, Florence + The Machine’s latest track was playing, and most diners had come in groups. Tables for two are small, I noticed, so if you come as a pair, ask for a window seat to use the sill for extra storage and get a bird’s-eye view of the area.
The menu is seafood lover’s wish list: West Coast clam chowder, black pepper squid, tuna and watermelon tartar, moules frites, oysters with Prosecco mignonette, and, of course, lots of crab… but my order didn’t quite match the menu.
What was described as dressed crab Caesar salad with poached egg turned out to be deep-fried soft shell crab with bread-crumbed poached egg on a Caesar salad. The egg was a welcome surprise, though – crispy on the outside, soft and gooey inside. For my second course of king crab, the ‘Best Legs in Town’, when it came to my choice of accompaniment there was more confusion over what was cold herb mayonnaise and what was hot garlic butter. For dessert, my vanilla ice cream sundae with cherry and biscuit actually came with strawberry, pistachio and cookie dough. Surprise!
I had to laugh about it with the manager (who was keen for feedback) and put the discrepancies down to launch phase teething problems as the place had only been open a week. If you’re fussy, let Crab Tavern find its feet before you go to sample their legs, but do pay this place a visit. The dishes are too tempting not to. I have to go back for the shrimp mac’n’cheese toastie, at the very least.

After Forbes put Perry on their cover for being one of the world’s highest paid celebs, she took to Instagram, saying: “Don't think that I didn't celebrate this moment by going straight to Taco Bell and getting my crunch wrap supreme.” A clear case of too much money and no taste.
