So, it’s official: one of Hollywood’s enduring romances spanning a decade has come to an abrupt end as Joshua Jackson and Diane Kruger call time on their relationship. It comes as a shock, given Diane just moved to New York to be with Joshua in March this year and admitted she had finally agreed to move in and play house. Then on 15 July, the pair was pictured celebrating her 40th birthday in loved-up style – the recent displays of coupledom seemed to silence the critics, who for months have been claiming the pair where on the verge of a breakup. So, what went wrong with one of Tinseltown’s most enduring couples?
FROM THE BEGINNING
Let’s take a trip down Memory Lane. In 2013, Diane Kruger spoke to television host Conan O’Brien about her relationship with Joshua Jackson, her then-partner of seven years. She revealed their first date was plagued by allergies and misunderstandings. But somehow, the two stars worked it out and they had been together ever since.
Even from the start, Diane was reluctant to make a full commitment to ‘happy ever after’ following her five-year marriage to French filmmaker Guillaume Canet, which ended in a bitter divorce. Diane made it clear she was sworn off saying “I do” ever again. While Canet quickly moved on, the The Bridge star was left facing a thirtysomething crisis.
“For a long time I felt that I was so accomplished. I speak three languages, I travel the world, I’ve seen so many things. But when I turned 30 I realised I was an idiot. I don’t know about anything,” she said.
Fortunately, she found love again with TV star Joshua. “I’m grateful that I met a person who feels the same, not just about me but also about our relationship,” she gushed about him back in 2013. While they flew for 24 hours to see each other and got papped getting cosy in LA grocery stores, the world gave this couple their seal of approval.
DAMAGED BY DIVORCE?
Their relationship seemed to go from strength to strength. But despite being together for a decade, the two never get around to tying the knot, and Joshua didn’t seem to be affected by this. “I don’t feel any more or less committed to Diane for not having stood in front of a priest and had a giant party. We’re both children of divorce, so it’s hard to take marriage at face value as the thing that shows you’ve grown up and are committed to another person,” the former Dawson’s Creek star said.
The couple moved in together in March 2016, buying an apartment in New York, and celebrated Diane’s 40th birthday by spending a romantic day together. One day later, though, the actress took the decision to break things off and posted a selfie on Instagram with the caption that hinted at her heartbreak: “It’s my party and I’ll cry if I want to. #ANewBeginning.”
We’re left intrigued by the Jimi Hendrix lines Diane shared on Instagram recently: “The story of life is quicker than the wink of an eye. The story of love is hello and good-bye until we meet again.” Is there a tiny glint of hope of a reunion in this cryptic message? Only time will tell.
