Demi Lovato hits out at top execs for airing a joke about eating disorders

Demi Lovato was in attack mode on Twitter on 24 December, taking on
Disney bosses for airing a joke about eating disorders on one of their hit TV
shows.

The 19-year-old singer/actress was extra-sensitive about
the issue as she had enrolled in a rehab programme in 2010 to deal with bulimia
and other issues. Demi became angry after watching an episode of the popular
show Shake It Up, during which one of the characters quips, "I could just
eat you up. Well, if I ate."

The joke didn't go down well with Lovato, who quit her
lead role on the Disney show Sonny With a Chance earlier in 2011. And she took
to Twitter to vent.

In a series of tweets, Demi wrote, "I find it really
funny how a company can lose one of their actress' from the pressures of an
EATING DISORDER and yet still make jokes about that very disease. nice."

Referring to other former child stars Raven-Symone and
Hilary Duff, she added, "And is it just me or are the actress(es) (on
Disney Channel) getting THINNER AND THINNER.... I miss the days of RAVEN, and
LIZZIE MCGUIRE."

Demi still wasn't done - she also sent a tweet directly
to Disney, writing, "Dear Disney Channel, EATING DISORDERS ARE NOT
SOMETHING TO JOKE ABOUT."

Disney reps saw the angry tweets hours later and issued
an apology, insisting they would be taking action to prevent offending other
viewers.

A spokesperson replied, "we hear you & are
pulling both episodes as quickly as possible & reevaluating them... It's
NEVER our intention to make light of eating disorders!"

Accepting the apology, Demi wrote back, "Thank
you."
