Leaving the security of a solid residency with Atlantis and starting my own company Mais Musica with my business partner Mako of Smokingroove was a challenge. Balancing running a business with the gigs was tricky at first but it’s nice to now observe the company taking shape and beginning to grow.
I have opened for some of the artists who defined my musical tastes growing up. Acts like The Wailers, Jamiroquai, The Jacksons, Chic, De La Soul, Arrested Development are hugely inspiration for me, both then and now. I recently got to meet Quincy Jones, Edgar Davids and Buzz Aldrin on the same night.
I play at some amazing parties. Sandance, The Yasalam F1 concert warm up for Pharell Williams at the Du Arena before 22000 people and The NYE Masterjam at Media City to name a few. I also still maintain some weekly residencies at venues like Zero Gravity, Yacht Club, Nasimi and Bliss Lounge.
I’ve got a tendency to put too much pressure on myself to get everything done in one sitting. Probably learning how to manage time better has been my biggest adjustment.
I usually get to bed around 2 or 3am. I get up by ten latest, try to drag myself to the gym, then its meetings, invoicing, pitches and event planning as well as preparation for gigs, finding new music and promoting forthcoming parties.
I find the guys behind Dubizzle, Sim Whatley and JC Butler, hugely admirable. They are an amazing example of how well a local start up can do with a good idea and some hard work.
