Long gone is the sorrow of having to give up a professional footballing career in chilly Scotland – Ahlan!’s 2012 Best in Dubai winner is now living his DJ’ing dream.
You won Ahlan!’s Best in Dubai DJ Award in 2012. What were your other top moments of the year?
I played three festivals: Agoraphones, Sandance and Southport 48. I opened for acts like Alexander O’Neal, Gwen Dickey, Brand New Heavies, Soul II Soul and Morcheeba. I also had the pleasure to open for The Jacksons as part of their Unity Tour in Abu Dhabi. Meeting them really blew my mind. And I opened the Yasalam F1 Weekend on Yas Island for my schoolboy crush, Kylie Minogue!
You call yourself a music addict – when did this addiction begin?
Dad plays guitar and sings; my uncle introduced me to some great classic soul and reggae, and Mum was Brazilian – singing and dancing was in her blood. My life was infused with a great variety of music.
How did you land to your job?
I was playing football professionally for Aberdeen FC and, after my second operation, I was told to find another career. While I was recuperating my DJ’ing hobby unexpectedly took off.
What’s your favourite event of the whole year?
Easily Sandance in Dubai. I’ve been involved in every one but the first.
Is being a DJ a glamorous life?
We do get to stay in some great hotels, but the reality is most of my days are spent in front of a computer with my headphones on listening to promos. It’s not all shiny disco balls and red carpets!
