Child Stars Gone Bad
Catapulted into the limelight as wide-eyed toddlers, or precocious tweens, it’s no wonder so many pre-pubescent performers lose the plot. What would you have done with a million in the bank before you’d mastered your times tables? We’re pretty sure we’d have blown it on strawberry laces, but times have changed. In T’Town, cash is king, no matter how old you are. And these little darlings weren’t afraid to buy it, drink it, crash it or marry it. Ahlan! charts the highs and lows of Hollywood’s hottest messes.
Rise to fame: Started her career as the Shake ‘N Bake girl at the age of three, before bursting onto our movie screens as the super-cute Cindy Lou Who alongside Jim Carrey in How The Grinch Stole Christmas in 2000.
FALL FROM GRACE: Decided she wanted to be in a band, so formed The Pretty Reckless. Also decided that it was totally fine to go out in her underwear and flash her lady bumps on stage. Wrong.
FYI: Taylor was nearly cast as Hannah Montana, instead of bride-to-be, Miley Cyrus.
Rise to fame: Talented Tatum won an Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress aged 10 for her role in Paper Moon alongside her father, Ryan O’Neal. Sadly, Ryan was a better actor than he was a dad. Tatum left her mum to live with her father when she was 15 but alleges he put his new girlfriend, Farrah Fawcett, ahead of his children, leaving her to go off the rails.
Fall from grace: O’Neal says she started taking illegal substances aged 15 to keep her weight down, and has been in and out of rehab ever since. Arrested in 2008 for trying to buy the bad stuff, she landed back in rehab in February this year after a relapse.
FYI: Tatum was married to bad-tempered tennis ace John McEnroe. They are now divorced but have three children together.
Rise to fame: Went to comedy camp then got her own Nickelodeon slot, The Amanda Show. Teen film roles in What I like About You and What a Girl Wants followed.
Fall from grace: This year, it all went a bit wrong for Amanda when she was pulled over for DUI after hitting a police car. Error. The purple-haired mugshot followed. As did further allegations of a hit and run, which were subsequently quashed.
FYI: In June 2010, Amanda announced on Twitter that she was retiring from acting. Then she took it back. That’s embarrassing.
Haley Joel Osment
Rise to fame: He saw dead people back in 1999 when he starred in The Sixth Sense. Next, he appeared alongside Jude Law in AI. Then he piled on the pounds and got a bit less cute and it all went a bit wrong.
Fall from grace: In July 2006, Haley, then 18, was arrested after crashing his car into a postbox while under the influence in California. He ended up pleading no contest to charges of DUI and misdemeanor possession.
FYI: He’s currently filming a Frankenstein remake entitled Wake The Dead. More dead people, Haley? Isn’t that asking for trouble?
Rise to fame: The super cute star started out at the tender age of three in a McDonald’s commercial. Then he starred in a string of hits in the Eighties including The Goonies, Stand by Me and The Lost Boys.
Fall from grace: The Nineties weren’t so fab for Feldman. With success came substance abuse, and Corey got hooked. And then it all went even more pear-shaped. He last hit the news for a scuffle with his stalker who, oddly, he used to let live in his house. Go figure.
FYI: Corey’s last foray into films was when he co-starred in a direct-to-DVD sequel to The Lost Boys in 2008. Oh dear, there’s no recovering from that.
Rise to fame: Back in the day, we all used to swoon over him. Don’t deny it, you know you did. And who wouldn’t – he was a teen dream with a career to match. He peaked in 1991 when he starred alongside Arnold Schwarzenegger in Terminator 2. And then it all went a bit wobbly.
Fall from grace: In April 2001, Eddie was hospitalised for a suspected overdose. Later that year, he was slapped with a DUI, then things went quiet until 2004 when he was arrested for public intoxication after he released some lobsters from their display tank. Then he ended up in a psych ward in 2009 after allegedly punching his wife. Fortunately, the now fat Furlong is picking up work and is currently shooting a new film, Bailout, with ex-Prison Break star Dominic Purcell. And eating. A lot, by the looks of it.
FYI: Furlong once left bonkers messages on his ex-wife’s voicemail threatening to beat her with “chains and bats”. Charming.
Rise to fame: Shannen first played the cute Jenny Wilder in a remake of Little House on the Prarie before going on to her best-known role as Brenda Walsh on Beverly Hills 90210.
Fall from grace: Take your pick. Shannen was arrested for being involved in a bar brawl while out on the town with her 90210 co-stars in 1992, before coming back into contact with the long arm of the law in 1996, when she allegedly smashed a bottle on a car window during an argument. She was at it again in 1998 when she was arrested for DUI and has since been married and divorced twice before snaring hubby number three this year. Third time lucky, Shazza; may the force be with you. Or should that be with your husband?
FYI: She’s come full circle. Doherty’s playing Brenda on the 90210 remake.
Rise to fame: Starring as cunning Kevin McCallister in the Home Alone series, of course.
Fall from grace: Stopped getting film roles soon after Home Alone ended, married at 18, got divorced, then last week threw himself a bizarrely themed iPod: Dinosaur birthday party. A reporter who made it to the bash wrote, “Culkin never self-destructed before our eyes, but what’s unclear is his current state of mind. I couldn’t tell whether his dinosaur party was ironic. Since we’ve all trapped him as a child, perhaps he wants his guests to be there with him.” Oh dear.
FYI: When he was a teenager, Macaulay was close friends with Michael Jackson, leading many to believe there was funny business afoot.
