Sheen will be starring alongside Whoopi Goldberg

Charlie Sheen has landed his first movie role since his big HIV reveal last year. The actor has been cast alongside Whoopi Goldberg in Nine Eleven, a new drama about the September 11 terrorist attacks in New York City in 2001.

The film, co-written and directed by Martin Guigui, will centre on five individuals and their struggle to survive after becoming trapped in an elevator in the World Trade Centre. Boogie Nights star Luis Guzman, The Wire's Wood Harris, and Little Fockers actress Olga Fonda will also feature.

Sheen's manager, Mark Burg, will executive produce the project with Thunder Studios boss Rodric David, among others.

"We are immensely grateful to bring this inspirational story to life," Guigui says in a statement released to Wenn. "Nine Eleven is a highly emotional journey and it took a dynamic bunch to collectively come together to make this unique film happen.

"We are fortunate to have such a gifted cast on board. Both Charlie and Whoopi are native New Yorkers who strongly identify with this story."

Sheen adds, "I feel deeply connected to the material and I'm so excited to be working with my dear friend Whoopi Goldberg."

Nine Eleven marks Sheen's first movie in three years, after previously appearing in 2013's Machete Kills. It is also his first big project since confirming he is HIV-positive in a candid TV interview in November, when he revealed he was working on getting his career back on track.
