Celebrity Money Scandals Featuring Michael Jackson, Lindsay Lohan and Naomi Campbell
Stars like Naomi Campbell and Britney Spears may be world famous but even they run into money issues from time to time
Michael Jackson: He may have sold in excess of 60 million albums in the US alone, but when he died back in 2009 details of Michael Jackson’s less-than-platinum bank accounts were revealed. Although he was on the brink of a sell-out world tour, which might just have gone some way to sorting out his money issues, the star was estimated to be in Dhs1.5 billion in debt at the time of his passing.
Lindsay Lohan: Li-Lo seems to have tax bills mounting from various years and states across the US. Currently she’s looking at owing the IRS more than Dhs700,000 for 2009 and 2010 and over Dhs180,000 for 2011. An unlikely saviour came to her rescue in the form of Charlie Sheen, who dished out a cool Dhs350,000 to tide the beleaguered star over.
Sarah Ferguson: With a previous estimate of Dhs28 million of debt, you would think Fergie would be flying under the radar. But she’s been spotted in the Caribbean, skiing and shopping-up a storm. Sources say she’s reduced the amount thanks to a little help from her ex husband Britain’s Prince Andrew.
The Osbournes: Given just how much the couple must have earned in the last decade, what with their reality show, Ozzy’s renewed career and Sharon’s stints on X Factor, it came as a huge surprise when the British papers reported that the couple were recently slapped with a Dhs4 million tax bill. The couple reportedly hope to sell their Beverly Hills mansion in a bid to cover the costs.
Naomi Campbell: In 2010 it wasn’t her fiery temper which got her in trouble with the US Government but her less than stellar budgeting skills. According to records, the supermodel was being sought for an unpaid IRS bill of Dhs350,000.
Pamela Anderson: It seems mounting tax bills combined to sink Pammie into deep debt. Back in 2009, she owed Dhs6 million and in 2011, Dhs1.3 million. The spiralling debt has earned the star the dubious sobriquet of one of California’s ‘Top 500 Delinquent Tax Payers.’
Kerry Katona: Cash-strapped Katona was in the headlines this January when she became the face of a payday loan company. With interest rates up to 4,000 per cent and fines for missed payments, the irony wasn’t lost on the British public who witnessed Katona’s very public 2008 bankruptcy, 2012’s Dhs400,000 tax bill, and another unpaid bill of Dhs2 million to her ex-manager.
Britney Spears: Luckily for Brit she is back on the straight and narrow and earning cash again as it seems the California Franchise Tax Board has hit her and Kev (remember him?) with a Dhs135,000 bill for unpaid taxes from 2004, the year the couple got married. We don’t think she is too bothered now she’s earning a reported Dhs55 million from X Factor. Kev, however, might be another story.
Shane from Westlife: Last year Shane Filan of Westlife announced his bankruptcy as news broke suggesting he had racked up a staggering Dhs102million in debt. Although his former band sold more than 45 million records, it appears it was the star’s massive property empire that – combined with Ireland’s economic woes – sent the star into gob-smacking debt.
Nicolas Cage: Where to start with this one? Nic seems to have debts piling up everywhere. There are various tax bills (with one standing at a massive Dhs22 million), and then in 2009 it seems he defaulted on a Dhs7.3 million loan. Apparently the situation got so serious the star had to sell one of his numerous castles in an attempt to settle the debts. Poor Nic!
