Queen Latifah started her career in the late 80s with the
rap group Ladies Fresh. She released her first album, All Hail the Queen, in 1989
and later shifted to singing mostly soul and jazz standards. She found fame
when she was cast as Mama Morton in the 2002 musical film Chicago, for which she was nominated for the Best
Supporting Actress Oscar. Her other films include Bringing Down the House,
Scary Movie 3, Hairspray and Life Support.
There has been a great deal of speculation about her
sexuality as she has never been seen with, or spoken about, a male partner. In
May 2010, Advocate magazine reported that she had bought a house with her
personal trainer Jeanette Jenkins. This has led to reports that they are living
together as a couple.
She is one of three hip-hop artists to receive an Oscar
nomination in an acting category. The others are Will Smith and Mark Wahlberg.
