Career: Ellen started performing stand-up comedy at small clubs and coffee houses. In 1981 she became the emcee at Clyde’s Comedy Club in New York and soon after she began to tour nationally. In 1994 her sitcom, Ellen, began a successful four-year run. The 1997 episode in which her character came out was one of the highest-rated episodes. In 2001 she returned to television with her own talkshow, The Ellen Show. Her daytime talkshow, The Ellen DeGeneres Show, launched in 2003. She hosted the Emmy Awards in November 2001 and the Oscars in 2007.
Relationships: Ellen first spoke publicly about her homosexuality on the Oprah Winfrey Show in February 1997. In 2007 Ellen started a three-year relationship with actress Anne Heche. After they split, she dated actress and photographer Alexandra Hedison from 2001-2004. She started dating former Ally McBeal star Portia de Rossi in 2004. They announced their engagement in May 2008 and were married on 18th August 2008.
