Career: South African-born Charlize started her career as a model, before moving to New York to train as a ballet dancer. A knee injury ended her dancing career when she was 19 and her mother sent her a one-way ticket to Los Angeles. She was spotted by a talent scout when she became involved in a shouting match in a bank. Eight months later she was cast in a non-speaking role in Children of the Corn III. Roles in The Devil’s Advocate, Mighty Joe Young and The Cider House Rules followed, and she won the Best Actress Oscar for her portrayal as serial killer Aileen Wuornos in 2003’s Monster.
Relationships: Charlize started dating actor Stuart Townsend when they met on the set of Trapped in 2001. They separated in 2010.
FYI: Charlize’s father died in 1991 after he was shot by her mother. He was an alcoholic who physically attacked her mother and threatened them both when he was drunk.
