The 10th annual Dubai International Film Festival (DIFF) got underway on 6 December with a glam gala screening at the Madinat Jumeirah.
Australian actress Cate Blanchett was the star of the red carpet, wearing a long burgundy frock, while veteran actor Martin Sheen was also in town.
The dad of actor Charlie Sheen picked up a lifetime achievement award from the organisers and paid tribute to the late South African president Nelson Mandela in his speech.
New biopic Mandela: A Long Walk to Freedom is one of the films due to be screened at the festival. It's one of more than 150 movies and short films which make up the event, which has attracted industry bosses as well as stars from around the world.
The opening film was acclaimed Palestinian movie Omar.
The festival continues on 7 December with a screening of new celeb-packed film August: Osage County among the highlights.
Most screenings are open to the public, with films being shown at the Madinat as well as Vox Mall of the Emirates plus Burj Park.
