Calvin Harris is doing his duty as a scorned ex-lover and also taking a page out of his ex-girlfriend, Taylor Swift’s book, by writing a break-up song. The song named Olé, features John Newman on the vocals, and is written and produced by the DJ.
The single was apparently written months ago, so was Taylor cheating on Calvin as the rumours suggested? The lyrics definitely hint at Taylor and Tom’s secretive relationship, but oddly, the song seems to be written from Tom’s perspective. "My heart speaks, I ain't seen you or been with you for weeks,” Newman croons. “But I see online that you've begun to be a good girl and take trips with your boyfriend, being attentive, continue to pretend…”
Harris was absent from the Met Gala, while Taylor Swift attended and engaged with an epic dance battle with Tom Hiddleston, which is probably where their romance began. However, shortly afterwards, Swift played the doting girlfriend to Calvin, for everyone to see via a viral snap on Instagram which pictured her cheering him on stage, as he performed at Coachella.
The song also includes a major reference to Tom Hiddleston’s character Loki, from the Thor movies. “Low key, you won't tell none of your friends about me.” Loki and low key are pronounced exactly the same way. That had to be intentional! Very clever Calvin and nicely played.
Taylor Swift’s team argues that the song was written months before Tom and Taylor met, but could they being lying to protect the Shake it Off singer’s good girl image?
It may seem coincidental, but Calvin also posted a picture to Snapchat a few weeks ago, surrounded by models on a yacht, with a cryptic caption “I write songs.” While at the time it didn’t make any sense, the release of the new track appears to be playing Taylor at her own game, given her reputation for penning no holds barred melodies based on her failed relationships.
While the drama appears to be intensifying, Hiddleswift don’t seem to be paying attention. They’ve taken their international romance to Australia, where Tom is filming Thor: Ragnarok. Is anyone else waiting for Taylor to retaliate with an equally shady single? An album is due any month now!
