Brunch Review: Morimoto, Renaissance Downtown Hotel

Unlimited Japanese cuisine in a stunning venue overlooking the Burj Khalifa? You didn’t have to ask us twice to try out Morimoto’s new brunch menu at the Renaissance Downtown Hotel.

On arrival, the place is obviously buzzing. So much so that we have to queue for ages to get in. There’s nothing more frustrating than arriving and seeing your mates at the table, but not being able to join because the reception is slow in assigning armbands. Alas, we write the delayed entry down to it being the brunch launch.
Once we’re at the table, we say our hellos, grab a drink and start investigating the live stations. We start with chicken spring rolls, dipped in a sweet chilli sauce. They’re thin and crispy on the outside, and packed full of hot chicken and veg in the middle.

For mains, which are brought to the table, we tuck into chicken gyoza – hot dumplings filled with chicken, topped with a scallion and ginger sauce. They’re so good that they vanish in seconds.

For the more traditional meat eaters are the table, there’s the grilled steak, which is cooked to order. We ask for ours medium rare, and the steak turns up on a sizzling grill. Already chopped into slices, it’s beautifully charred on the outside, yet melts in the mouth.

After our meal, we retreat to the stunning terrace with magnificent city views, where we Instagram the rest of the afternoon away. Both inside and outside is brimming with patrons, making this one of the liveliest Japanese brunches we’ve come across. Once you get in, that is.
