Brunch Review: Backyard Brunch, FireLake Grill House & Cocktail Bar

A new brunch in town is always a cause for celebration, and the Backyard Brunch at FireLake Grill House & Cocktail Bar is no exception.

We arrive at sleek new hotel, the Radisson Blu Hotel, Dubai Waterfront, ready to feast. And we certainly aren’t disappointed. Set al fresco on the terrace, the Backyard Brunch has a stunning Burj Khalifa view. As the mercury continues to drop, this is set to become a brunch favourite.

A quick stop to the slushie station leaves us with a very refreshing blueberry iced drink in our hands, and we’re ready to take a stroll around the live cooking stations.

Like its Texan theme, everything at this brunch is bigger and better. There are barbecues, grilling up fresh fish, prawns and kebabs, and smokers full of beef brisket and sausages. A country duo on the mics set the tone of the day, singing classic country songs and western versions of all your favourite hits.

Then it’s time to eat! Only the starters are a la carte, so we kick our feast off by ordering a few small plates.

The crab croquettes, eggs Benedict, chicken taquitos and classic Caesar salads are our favourites. Mussels, chicken wings and mushroom flatbreads are also available to order.

We then head indoors for a browse of the salad stations, and load up on fresh sides like couscous and a Greek salad, before tucking into fresh-from-the-grill prawns, chicken skewers and, of course, brisket.

The meat is super-tender and almost melts in our mouth – just make sure you load up on barbecue sauce too, for the most authentically Texan taste.

It’s a long, leisurely afternoon, so we then allow ourselves some breathing room before tucking into dessert. The homemade Snickers bar is a sticky, sweet triumph, and the lemon meringue pie is every bit as deliciously tart as you’d hope it would be.

It was then time to call it a day, which we did with a block of the homemade chocolate brittle, packed full of dried fruit, for the road.
