The Oscars ceremony on Sunday night ran smoothly until the show’s disastrous finale when Warren Beatty announced the wrong film and claimed La La Land had won the Best Picture Oscar instead of Moonlight, having been given the incorrect envelope.
It wasn’t until the stars and producers gave acceptance speeches that the error was recognised and Beatty apologised for the mistake. The winning movie’s director Barry Jenkins was called up to the stage rushed to the stage to accept the top honour.
While La La Land won six gongs, including Best Actress for Emma Stone, Best Director for Damien Chazelle, who is now the youngest winner for that category in history, and Best Orginal Song, it had 14 nominations in total.
Casey Affleck won Best Actor for his performance in Manchester by the Sea, Viola Davis won her first ever Oscar of Best Supporting Actress for her role in Fences and Mahershala Ali took home the award for Best Supporting Actor for his role in Moonlight.
Fortunately, both the Moonlight and La La Land crew handled the huge mishap graciously!
