Billie Eilish heaped praise on her brother and songwriting partner, Finneas, as she accepted Variety's Hitmaker of the Year award on Saturday, insisting she wouldn't be alive without him.
The 17-year-old singer delivered a heartfelt speech at the brunch event in Los Angeles, revealing her brother kept her going when a clueless record label boss told her there weren't any hits on her breakthrough album When We All Fall Asleep, Where Do We Go?
"Finneas is my best friend, my big brother, he's four years older than me and we've been best friends kinda forever," she said. "We started making music together when I was 13 and he was 17. He produces everything. He's the only reason I'm anywhere in the whole world, and he's probably the only reason I'm alive."
Billie also revealed her single Everything I Wanted is about her relationship with her brother, stating, "Finneas came up with the line, 'As long as I'm here, no one can hurt you'. We decided to make it about our relationship and how we help each other and, like, deal with things together. It just completely, like, paved the way for the rest of the song."
