Behind the Smiles & Dresses at the Golden Globes 2015

15 Jan 2015

Jennifer Aniston copied Angelina Jolie, Leo DiCaprio ditched the show, and Bill Cosby got roasted

It was supposed to be a night that signals the start of award season in Hollywood and gives a hint to the favourites tipped for Oscar glory, but this year’s Golden Globes were snubbed by a surprisingly large number of A-listers.

The most noticeable of Tinseltown royalty that was missing in action was of course Brangelina, who’ve been busy promoting Ange’s latest movie, Unbroken. Also absent from the red carpet was acting heavyweight Leonardo DiCaprio, who’d been spotted partying with Naomi Campbell and rapper 50 Cent the night before the awards. Maybe Leo was too worse for wear to attend the Golden Globes, but Team Ahlan! can’t help but wonder what excuses heartthrobs Bradley Cooper, Johnny Depp, Tom Cruise, Michael Fassbender and Ben Affleck all had for skipping the event. It wasn’t just the men who kept a low profile, as leading ladies Jennifer Lawrence, Kate Blanchett and Kate Winslet all decided not to bother going either. Maybe all that glitters just isn’t as Golden as the Oscars.

One group who did turn up were the stars of Entourage, who were busy working the red carpet to get authentic scenes for their upcoming movie. The film’s cameras were rolling as Adrian Grenier, Jeremy Piven and their castmates arrived at the plush Beverly Hilton Hotel, confusing the crowd as to whether or not they were in character.

If Jennifer Aniston was finally trying to let her career overshadow her personal life, she missed that opportunity thanks to her unimaginative outfit choice. Jen chose a black dress that everyone thought was a copy of Angelina’s 2012 Oscar attire – Jen’s leg may not have been as prominent as Ange’s was in Atelier Versace, but Aniston’s Saint Laurent dress was too close in style for comfort. They say that imitation is the sincerest form of flattery, so we guess Ange should be feeling pretty good after seeing Jen copy her look.

Red-Carpet Wonders
Jen copied Ange, Amal took a political stance, Keira brought wildlife to the awards and Lena shared way, way too much of herself…

Amal’s Sober Attire
One person making a statement with her outfit was George Clooney’s wife Amal, who hit the red carpet in a customised haute couture black gown by French fashion house Dior. The British human rights lawyer said she chose the designer “in solidarity with the French people who have gone through a terrible week,” referring to the gun massacre at the headquarters of French satirical magazine Charlie Hebdo in Paris.

Keira’s 30-Man Dress
Keira Knightley showed she’s not above being a diva when she walked the red carpet in a dress that took 30 tailors to create! The Chanel frock was embellished with butterflies and put together in just one week. Her insect-styled piece is proof that even when pregnant, one can look pretty fly.

Lena’s saucy snaps
Serial attention-seeker Lena Dunham shared far too much with Instagram followers by posing for a topless pic as she prepared for the big event. It’s not clear what she hoped to achieve with the indecent image, but thankfully she covered herself up in a stylish red Zac Posen dress.

The Leading Ladies Let Rip
Comedy stars Amy Poehler and Tina Fey took aim at their celebrity audience once again

The Golden Globes are well known for being a raucous affair where no one is safe from ridicule – and this year was no different. Hosts Amy Poehler and Tina Fey set the tone early by abusing everyone in sight, but the most devastating jokes were aimed at troubled veteran comic Bill Cosby.

The ladies began by talking about Meryl Streep and her new flick Into the Woods, when Poehler said: “Cinderella ran away from her prince, Rapunzel was thrown from a tower and Sleeping Beauty just thought she was getting coffee with Bill Cosby.” The joke was met with gasps from the star-studded audience, but the girls didn’t stop there and kept the insults flying. Fey did her best Cosby impression and said: “I put the pills in the people. The people did not want the pills in them.” Poehler then feigned offence at the impersonation and added: “That’s not right” before doing one of her own in which she said: “It’s more like, ‘I got the pills in the bathrobe and I put them in the people’.”

Former Golden Globes host Ricky Gervais did his own celebrity roast when presenting an award. The star of The Office got the biggest shock reaction of the night when he blasted Katie Holmes. Addressing the crowd and explaining how some people in Hollywood would do anything to be famous, Gervais said: “I’m not even looking at Katie Holmes,” which prompted the whole room to gasp, as it seemed as though he was saying Katie only married Tom Cruise for stardom. That one was a little below the belt, even by Ricky’s incredibly harsh comedy.
