Can’t be saintly seven days a week? Ahlan! wonders if once a week is enough...

As PAUL McCARTNEY and a host of eco-friendly celebs – including CHRIS MARTIN, KEVIN SPACEY, WOODY HARRESON and RICHARD BRANSON – urge us to go veggie once a week with a new ‘Meat Free Monday’ campaign, we’ve been questioning if dipping our toe in a healthy lifestyle can do our bods any good? Sure, we know ditching meat once a week can reduce greenhouse gas emissions responsible for global warming – and we’re totally on board with that - but can it make us thinner too? Ahlan! charts what a difference a day makes...

Being veggie For a day
They say:If everyone in the UAE (4 million) stopped eating meat for a day, we’d save as much CO2 in a year as taking almost half a million cars of the road.

What’s in it for us?The average daily calorie intake on a veggie plan is 1250 calories – 750 less than the average for a carnivore!

Sample menu
Breakfast:Cereal, yoghurt and fruit
Lunch:Pita with hummus and green salad, plus one piece of fruit
Dinner:Quick vegetable curry
Dessert:1 cup chopped melon

Eating raw For a day
They say:Heating food above 116 degrees is believed to destroy enzymes in food that can assist in the digestion and absorption of food.

They say:You can detox your bod by drinking nothing but cayenne pepper mixed with maple syrup, sugar and lemon.

What’s in it for us?By fasting once a week you could actually wind up gaining weight as your metabolism will slow down, making it harder for you to process the food you eat once you break your fast.

Two tbspoons of freshly squeezed lemon juice
Two tbspoons of maple syrup

1 cup of spring water

Eco-Atkins For a day
They say:
By replacing carbs with vegetarian proteins like soy, nuts and gluten you can lower your cholestrol and blood pressure.
