Andy Samberg Mistaken for Andrew Garfield in Dubai
Comic actor Andy Samberg and his new wife Joanna Newsom were given VIP treatment during a recent layover in Dubai after local airport officials mistook the comedian for The Amazing Spider-Man star Andrew Garfield.
The former Saturday Night Live actor, who recently won a Golden Globe award for his role in new TV comedy Brooklyn Nine-Nine, and singer Newsom were en route to the Maldives for their belated honeymoon over the New Year when they made a stopover in the United Arab Emirates and were pleasantly surprised as they were welcomed to the country by a greeting party.
However, Samberg soon realised the special treatment was the result of a case of mistaken identity. He explained: “We got off the plane and in Dubai there was a team waiting for us, ‘Oh, Mr. Andrew, Mr. Andrew!’... and we were like, ‘Oh, this is so nice, our travel agent must have really hooked it up.’ And they were like, ‘Everyone wants to take a picture with you guys.’ I was like, ‘OK, they know who we are in Dubai!’
“We were getting the royal treatment and I was like, ‘Man, they must have YouTube out here because we're really getting it done up.’ Then right before we left the airport the woman who had greeted us there said, ‘So, are you going to make any new Spider-Man films soon?’ And I was like, ‘Oh, she thinks I'm Andrew Garfield because my name's Andrew’
“I didn’t know what else to do, so I just said, ‘Yes. You know, they’re a lot of work, but we do it for the fans.’ It made me feel so bad for her because I imagine she posted the photo we all took on Facebook!”
