Comedian Howie Mandel has issued an apology after cracking a joke about bulimia while judging a contestant on America's Got Talent on Tuesday.

The TV personality was giving feedback to daredevil act Steve Starr, known as The Regurgitator because he swallows objects and brings them back up, when he made the gaffe. During the live broadcast, Howie blurted out: "This would probably come out wrong, but you, sir, make bulimia entertaining."

The funnyman issued an apology later in the show, telling viewers: "I just want to take a second to apologise... I made a comment earlier, it's live television, I wasn't thinking. I made light of bulimia, which is a very serious eating disorder and mental health issue. I deal with mental health all the time, and I did something stupid. I should never make light of it. I apologise to anybody that was offended. I'm not perfect, I make mistakes."
