In the 18 months she’s been living in Dubai, mum of three Amber Hussain has spent over a year overseeing the gutting and redecorating of her six-bedroom villa in The Meadows.
Every window, every door, the flooring, the tiles and even the pool were ripped out and replaced to create Amber’s perfect “contemporary and practical family home”.
“Our main aim was to maximise the natural light coming into the house. We added concertina doors so the outside and inside merge, and the wall from our lounge to our garden is now a sheer wall of glass,” says Amber.
Shades of grey and silver are the predominant colours throughout the villa – even in the kitchen with its Fisher Paykel appliances – with splashes of colour injected via the furniture and statement accessories. Amber’s favourite pieces include her enormous turquoise mirror by Lebanese designer Nada Debs and the multicoloured beaded chandelier in her daughter’s bedroom.
Apart from the full-size cricket net in the garden (“my husband’s pride and joy,” says Amber), it’s the attention to detail that has made this house not only striking but also practical. “You wouldn’t know it, but we’ve even lowered the sinks in the children’s bathrooms,” adds Amber.
And it’s the tiny mosaic tiles in the downstairs closet that are always a talking point. “On the wall we’ve got these adorable circular mosaic tiles encrusted with diamantes – all our guests love our toilet,” laughs Amber.
